With its globally recognised but fiercely protected recipe for fried chicken, KFC is one of the brands that has divided public opinion. Love it or hate it, the fact is that very little is known about what goes on behind the scenes. Now for the first time KFC exclusively throws open its doors in a tell-all documentary series.The series takes viewers into the heart of the company and into the hearts of its loyal and disloyal customers and reveals why we have become addicted to fried chicken and chips. It beds in with the KFC brand, from the boardroom to the kitchen, and reveals the truth about the company that we all think we know. Colonel's Chicken In this first episode we take a look into the daily operations of staff at KFC, from those making the decisions in the boardroom to those in the kitchens of some of the 850 restaurants around the country. They include 17-year-old Beth, who has just started work in Manchester but is struggling to find her way, and company `policeman' Brian, who carries out spot-checks to scrutinise cleanliness and food standards. Cameras also visit one of the farms that supplies the company with the 23 million chickens it serves each year, and in Middleton, near Manchester, angry residents try to prevent a new KFC opening on their doorstep. Colonel's Worker's A new restaurant is due to open in Oxley, Wolverhampton, so the managers begin a recruitment drive to find the 50 members of staff they need. It's business as usual in other stores as the workers begin the day by scraping away the fat and cleaning toilets before opening the doors to the public. In Glasgow, manager Mark is struggling to keep the homeless from scavenging in the bins, while in Brixton Michelle heads up a pilot scheme to cut down on the amount of waste food being thrown away. In Manchester, the arrival of an internal inspector puts Beth in a panic. Colonel's Future At head office in Woking, marketing manager Meghan is keen to change the public's perception of unhealthy fried chicken and so is working on rebranding KFC as a nutritious fast-food giant, beginning with the launch of a new product. However, when it finally hits the hot shelf in Glasgow, restaurant manager Mark has a tough time pushing the idea to hardcore fried-chicken lovers. Meanwhile, the staff of an under-performing restaurant in Manchester helps manager Paul think of ideas for drumming up sales - but team member Beth isn't too impressed with the Peppa Pig promotion they eventually come up with.
