With its classic pop numbers, catchy refrains, razzamatazz and over-the-top lighting, the annual ritual of the Eurovision Song Contest has held audiences spellbound for decades. Each country sees it differently. The Scandinavians and East Europeans love it. The French and British are more ambivalent. But year after year, it goes on attracting the biggest television audiences in the world. Almost 200 million viewers switch on to cheer their favourites.
