On June 4, 1942, as the Imperial Navy suffered its first major defeat at Midway, the first Fletcher class destroyer was commissioned in Boston. By the end of the war, there were well over 100 of these revolutionary warships in the water, performing every imaginable task, from protecting carriers to bombarding enemy troops on land.
