Information
The Falling Man tells the story of the most unforgettable image from 9/11 -- a photograph taken by Associated Press photographer Richard Drew of a falling man, a jumper from the North Tower of the World Trade Centre, frozen in mid-air, perfectly vertical and parallel with the building behind him.
The subject of the image was one of the people trapped on the upper floors of the skyscraper who apparently chose to jump rather than die from the fire and smoke.
As many as 200 people jumped to their deaths that day; there was no time to recover or identify those who were forced to jump prior to the collapse of the towers.
The image ran in newspapers and magazines across the world over the following week and should have remained the defining image of that terrible day. Instead, it was suddenly and inexplicably taken out of circulation. Why?
Acclaimed documentary searches for the identity of one of the victims of the 9/11 attacks, whose desperate jump/fall from one of the Twin Towers was caught by a photographer and seen around the world. Documentary also uncovers why the image came to be suppressed by the media and supplanted by a more 'heroic' iconography of firemen and policemen, eventually seeking to fathom the unique heroism of the 'jumpers'.
The Falling man follows the trail of the photograph -- of the photographer who shot it, of the citizens who decried it, of the editors who published and then banned it, of the journalist who tried to identify the figure.
It is an extraordinary trail. Film is based on an Esquire magazine article written by Tom Junod.
