A collection of recorded interviews with First World War veterans bring to life the reality of the Battle of the Somme, the catastrophic campaign that began in the summer of 1916.
Chapter 3: Saving The Wounded
Archive recollections from nurses, amputees and the shell-shocked describe the human carnage that followed the battles of the First World War.
Chapter 4: Horror in The Mud
The story of 1917 and the battles at Arras and Passchendaele, when countless numbers drowned in mud.
Chapter 5: The Home Front
Documentary-maker Steve Humphries explores the suffering felt by the relatives left at home during the conflict, and how families changed after the arrival of the dreaded telegram.
Chapter 6: The Boys of 1918
Documentary-maker Steve Humphries explores the spring of 1918, when tens of thousands of 18-year-old British conscripts were sent to France to make up the numbers. Many were taken prisoner as the German advance continued, but by the summer the tide had begun to turn.
